One big aspect of my riding is commuting. In a normal week somewhere between 90 and 120 miles will be covered going to and from work. A little alert popped up on the company home page titled Make exercise a healthy habit. It contained this advice:
with the current commute that 60 minutes is easy to do — every morning and evening. I don’t view it as exercise though. It is just “getting to work” or “going home”. It can be made into exercise, like this morning, by concentrating on breathing and pace. It can be made into meandering, by taking a new route and looking at people’s flower gardens and house paint and decorative fencing. Changing the tone, the flavor, the way of the ride keeps it interesting. Somehow bicycle riding lends itself to these changes of tone, flavor, way.
When I started typing this piece I was thinking about last night, about 10:30 I got into a little frenzy. Chose my clothes for today, chose the riding clothes for the commute, laid them all out on a table near the bike. That trivial three minute preparation enabled me to get on the road a good twenty minutes earlier this morning. It was intended as a way to get over the first block problem. It turned into a time saver when the path from bed to door was uncluttered with distractions.
