Common Canola

An article (view ad to see for yourself) on the recent US Energy bill contains this nugget “the favorite biofuel worldwide, biodiesel from rapeseed, releases up to 70 percent higher total greenhouse gas than regular diesel..” The source of the information is the paper N2O release from agro-biofuel production negates global warming reduction by replacing fossil fuels from a team led by Nobel laureate Paul Crutzen. Rapeseed is the source of Canola. Many cars in the Portland area , and a growing number of Trimet buses, are using biodiesel. You see a plate on the rear trunk lid proudly proclaiming the fact.

Ironic isn’t it? Choices are made to be green and not burn fossil fuel. The result is a larger contribution to greenhouse gases. In fairness to the people and groups converting vehicles to biodiesel the source of the greenhouse gas is largely the nitrogen based fertilizer used in growing the rapeseed.

Good intentions …
