In past election cycles we, my wife and I, answer several phone calls a night. Calls came from campaigns and pollsters, live calls and robo calls, calls seeking to sway our vote, elicit a donation or just find out where we stood. Not this year. We dropped our land line and have only cell phone service. The phones have gone silent. We know we’re not alone, a significant portion of Americans have dropped land line service and gone cell only. How is this affecting the election process?

Pollsters don’t know my opinion. Candidates aren’t making appeals. We haven’t been hit up for donations. My wife and I are off the radar. Even with the candidates who have our phone number from donation forms, we’re not getting calls.

We’re in Portland, Oregon. With the heat of the presidential contest you’d think the Obama and Clinton campaigns would be calling. There’s a close race for a Dem candidate to go up against incumbent Smith. The secretary of state, mayoral and city council races are highly competitive. Out phones remain quiet.

Yesterday the local paper, The Oregonian, ran an article about saving money by disconnecting the land line. It stated “You can save … going wireless only. One of every seven U.S. households already has.” That’s 14% of the population who may be off the phone contact grid.

Recent emails from campaigns I’ve donated to show phone banking is still being heavily used. If my experience is in any way normal, 14% of the US is out of touch.

At the Daily Kos Diary Entry I have a poll asking “Have you gone cell phone only?” Allowed responses are:

• Yes, and I don’t get political calls.
• Yes, but I still get political calls.
• No, I have both services. I only get political calls on the land line.
• No, I have both services. I get political calls on both lines.
• Cell phone? I don’t need or want one.

You might want to go cast your vote and see what other people’s experiences are.

  Sorry to hear about the 14 % who are “out of touch” because of their phone choice. Breaks my heart.
  What’s not being acknowledged is the larger number of voters who are being ignored because they registered Independent or Other in a state with a closed primary.
  The pollsters — and the major party phone bankers for various candidates — don’t disturb my dinner at all.

  While it is good that you went on a cell phone it does not stop candidates from calling you. ie. they are exempt from all do not call registries as well as any laws around cell phones.

  So. Make sure that you:

  1) Don’t contribute or volunteer and give your cell phone number. Once they have it, you will be called.

  2) Don’t register to vote and put your cell phone number down. Then, the number will go to the state voter database and you will be called.

  We have over 50,000 voters that are saying enough is a enough and demanding that politicians stop robo calling them at home.

  Thanks for the great information. As it is I was just commenting on how the calls have stopped. Not on how I was trying to avoid getting them.

  Ironically, within 12 hours of making this post I did get a call from the Obama campaign.
