Earlier I wrote Jim Lehrer had won the debate. Here’s one example of why I feel that way.
OBAMA: 10 days ago, John said that the fundamentals of the economy are sound.
LEHRER: Say it directly to him.
OBAMA: I do not think that they are.
LEHRER: Say it directly to him.
OBAMA: Well, the — (turning to face McCain) John, 10 days ago, you said that the fundamentals of the economy are sound. And…
MCCAIN: (to Lehrer) Are you afraid I couldn’t hear him?
LEHRER: I’m just determined to get you all to talk to each other. I’m going to try.
He did try, and try and try. He also asked straightforward, direct questions and then let the candidates answer without interruption. Lehrer is a tough act for the other moderators to follow. CNN has a full debate transcript online for your review.
