I hear you. Almost same circumstance - do my first two bike commutes in months, into a head wind on the way home. Then I wonder why my muscles ache like I'd just ridden an out of shape 200K.

My boss said I look stoned - my eyes are still that red.

Dude,

After a healthy happy brisk post lunch run on Thursday I get some random scary high fever. I'm on my butt by 4:00 P.M. on Thursday. Monday the fever broke and this morning I'm alive but clearly ragged. Timing is everything.

I often get bicycling backwards. When I first started it was in the late fall and some six months before I rode in the daylight without rain. So now I'm starting over in the shortest daylight days of the year.

Go figure.

Maybe I'll even, eventually if not this year, figure out planning for a brevet. Like to to fix flats in the dark.

Well, and good, except for a few things:

1. Obama's plan would REQUIRE everyone to have health insurance. And my costs would not be based on my reality (earnings vs. expenses), but on some adjusted scale decided upon by someone who lives a life not even remotely resembling mine. I've been through the low-income assistance mill too many times to trust that my government WON'T require me to go broke paying for health insurance.

2. Good luck getting the insurance companies to accept me AND my preexisting condition.

3. After my premiums are covered, will I be able to afford to USE the insurance, or will the deductibles be so high that I choose to stay home rather than go broke trying to pay for treatment I can't afford?

I just don't trust that this is going in a good direction that is truly equitable for everyone. And because of that, I'd rather the government leave me alone, too. Even if it means I can't have health insurance and must resort to creative workarounds to get what I need. The workarounds are more affordable and leave me with enough money to keep a roof over my head.

Yes, multi-modal is an option. Busses are (mostly) air conditioned too. I have the option of riding for 3/4 mile, getting on the Halsey bus and taking it to a stop north of my home with a residential, tree shaded route to finish the day.

The icy camelbak should do fine though. We'll know Monday night!

If your race starts late enough the edge will be off the heat and the sun won't be beating down. That will help a lot

I'm riding in the mornings and will likely go multi-moda in the evenings.
Next Monday is the next-to-last in the PIR short-track series, but Sweetie has asked me not to race. ven though they're turning the sprinklers on all over the course and will hand out plenty of fluids to the racers. I'm going to watch and will see how it feels before deciding whether to race or not. (My category only races for 20 minutes plus a lap...)

I don't think bike riding and TriMet cost the same, but the cost of the latter is static while the cost of the former can vary depending on miles ridden and weather preparedness.

My round-trip bike commute is 25 miles, and I put in about 4800 bike-commute miles in 2008. (Vacation, working at home, and the December snows ate into my totals...)

I probably end up doing much more maintenance than normal. Chains, cassettes, tires, tubes, batteries, riding clothes, brake pads, occasional big problems (wheels, bottom bracket), and periodic professional maintenance do amount to a consistent, albeit low-level, budget item. $75 per month over the course of an entire year sounds a bit high, but certainly within spitting distance of my actual costs.

Folks with shorter commutes, of course, would see correspondingly lower costs due to wear and tear. Still, it's helpful to think of biking in terms of cost per mile -- and at some point the economics of TriMet are competitive.

Not that I'd give up the other benefits of biking -- health, de-stressing, enjoyment of the outdoors -- but I've found that it's not as inexpensive as I'd hoped.

I'm done with all that. Not buying health insurance, even if I could ever find a company who'd take me. Nope, no way. I think I'll just live until I get sick and then I'll let someone else pick up the tab.

Seriously, those of us who can't get health insurance or afford drugs are already taking this approach whether we want to or not. So if my info gets sold to one company or another it doesn't really make much difference anyhow, not in this broken-down system.

No worries here.
